Kamryn Buchanan hails from Omaha Nebraska and is a 24-year-old model, counselor and beauty queen. Pursuing a PhD in Counseling Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), this future doctor is a 5’10” brunette stunner who has been a competitive athlete her entire life and proudly boasts that all 206 bones in her body are intact and original. “Often bruised, but never broken” was my mantra as an athlete. Her current roles as Outreach Suicide Prevention Coordinator and Clinical Therapist in Training at UNL Counseling and Psychological Services, ground her in life’s work.
Kamryn’s academic journey began with a B.S. in Child, Youth, and Family Studies, coupled with a minor in Psychology from UNL. Her commitment to education and mental health led her to the demanding PhD program in Counseling Psychology, where she maintains a 4.0 GPA. Balancing rigorous academics with her duties at the UNL Counseling and School Psychology Clinic highlights her formidable work ethic.
Recently crowned Miss Nebraska USA, one of Kamryn’s ambitions is to become Miss USA and represent the United States at Miss Universe. This goal aligns with her desire to launch a woman-owned and operated private practice counseling center, further extending her impact on mental health and empowerment. Kamryn’s personal mantra is “I Choose Me” – a testament to her belief in self-empowerment and prioritizing one’s passions and purpose. She advocates that women do not need to earn empowerment; it is inherently within them. “Our power is in us already; we need to stop seeking permission to be who we are, and live full lives without self-imposed limits or under societal restrictions who tell us we can’t possibly do, be or have ‘it all’. I think that’s nonsense, because yes we can, and yes… we will.”
Kamryn is particularly proud of her personal achievements, especially earning a 4.0 GPA in her PhD program while preparing for Miss Nebraska and Miss USA. Her dedication to excellence and her ability to manage multiple high stakes endeavors simultaneously are commendable.
Outside of her professional and academic life, Kamryn enjoys learning Spanish, doing barre and ballet, and building with Legos – something she finds very therapeutic. She also loves being a dog mom to her two French Bulldogs, Benzley and Buni.
Kamryn’s favorite movie, “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” and her favorite book, “Verity” by Colleen Hoover, offer a glimpse into her eclectic tastes. She finds joy and relaxation in TikTok and enjoys the soulful rhythms of R&B music. Her passion lies in seeing people achieve what they once thought was impossible. This passion fuels her motivation, particularly when her patients experience breakthrough moments and realize their power to effect change in their own lives.
Kamryn embodies the essence of empowerment, resilience, and dedication. Her journey from a high school graduate to a PhD candidate and mental health professional, coupled with her aspirations and personal interests, paint the portrait of a remarkable woman committed to making a significant impact on the world.
