In this interview, Jean shares insights into her philanthropic journey, her passion for fashion, and how she inspires others to make a difference.

Philanthropy: A Life Dedicated to Giving Back
Q: You are highly regarded as a philanthropist, author, advocate, and TV host. You are also considered a fashion icon and Instagram influencer. Let’s start with your philanthropy—how do you decide where to focus your resources when there are so many worthy causes?
• Jean Shafiroff: My main areas of focus are women’s rights, underserved populations, healthcare, and animal welfare. I also support many charities that champion LGBTQ rights and the arts. I dedicate most of my time and resources to the charities whose boards I serve on, the charity galas I chair, and the events I host. Each year, I chair about 10 charity galas and host 8-9 large cocktail parties at my home for various philanthropic causes. I feel honored and privileged to do this work!

Fashion and Philanthropy: A Perfect Blend
Q: Your love of fashion frequently lands you on ‘Best Dressed Lists,’ and you support emerging fashion designers. When you wear a label to a major gala, it can put a designer on the map. How do you decide ‘who’ to wear to which galas?
• Jean Shafiroff: I like to rotate the designer outfits I wear. When I wear a beautiful gown, the designer often receives significant publicity through my social media platforms, which generates media interest. I prioritize supporting highly talented, lesser-known, and emerging designers. Over time, many of them have become well-known. Designers I frequently wear include Malan Breton, Victor dE Souza, Zang Toi, Ese Azenabour, B Michael, Ron Dyson, and Fern New York. I also admire established designers like Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Gucci, Chanel, and Dolce & Gabbana.

Inspiring Communities Through Philanthropy
Q: The publicity you create for non-profits generates much-needed awareness. Tell us about other ways you inspire people to make a difference in their communities.
• Jean Shafiroff: Many readers of my book “Successful Philanthropy” have told me it inspired them to get involved in the philanthropic process. The premise of my book is that anyone can be a philanthropist. If you lack financial resources, you can give your time and knowledge. Those with financial capability have an obligation to give. My TV show “Successful Philanthropy” provides a platform for philanthropists and inspires others to get involved. Additionally, I encourage younger generations to participate in charity by including them in junior divisions of organizations and inviting them to galas and events I host.

The Roots of Philanthropy
Q: American philanthropy is the most effective and generous in the world. Where did your interest in philanthropy stem from, and how do we encourage future generations to continue that tradition?
• Jean Shafiroff: My parents and teachers were role models. Growing up, I attended 12 years of Catholic school, where the nuns instilled the importance of giving back. My stay-at-home mom volunteered at schools and our church, and my father, a music teacher, instilled good values. Younger generations must be taught the importance of philanthropy, which is why I’ve devoted a section of my book to this topic.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Philanthropists
Q: You have two daughters, both of whom are philanthropists in their own right. Tell us about their work and how you passed on the passion to give back.
• Jean Shafiroff: Our oldest daughter does extensive volunteer work in Kenya, helping children with disabilities. She holds a master’s in social work from NYU. Our youngest daughter is the co-founder and president of Global Strays, a charity that supports animal welfare internationally. My husband and I are very proud of them and encourage them to continue their work.

Advice for Aspiring Philanthropists
Q: Your book “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give” is a guide for aspiring philanthropists. What is your single most important piece of advice on philanthropy?
• Jean Shafiroff: Here are four key suggestions for getting involved in philanthropy:
1. Follow your passions and get involved in causes you truly care about.
2. Choose a cause where there is a need and where you can make a difference.
3. Ensure the charity is well-run and uses its funds responsibly.
4. Treat everyone involved—donors, volunteers, and workers—with dignity and respect.
Preserving a Legacy of Style
Q: As a member of the Couture Council since 2010, which supports the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), you’ve invested in preserving your collection of designer gowns. Will you ultimately donate your collection?
• Jean Shafiroff: A few years ago, I archived a large portion of my gown collection. I plan to donate the collection to a museum one day. Many of my gowns are designed by Latin designers, and I am considering writing a book about the collection to highlight its significance and the designers I admire.
Honored as the ‘First Lady of Philanthropy of New York’
Q: You’ve been honored by many charities and were recognized as the ‘First Lady of Philanthropy of New York’ by the New York State Assembly in 2022. At what point did you decide to make this your life’s work?
• Jean Shafiroff: It happened gradually. Once my daughters went off to college, I became more involved with charity boards, galas, and hosting events. Philanthropy bridges the gap between those with resources and those without. It’s my duty to do this work.

Advice for Success and Legacy
Q: What advice do you give to young people who want to be successful?
• Jean Shafiroff: To succeed, work hard, set goals, and act with honesty and kindness. Your reputation is everything—people want to work with those they trust.
Q: What legacy do you hope to leave through your philanthropy?
• Jean Shafiroff: I want to be remembered as someone who worked hard to help society. There’s nothing more important than giving back.
